Cloud Deck 8105'

Day 105

The cloud deck was just below the summit today which made from some great scenery.

B104 Bomber Day

The empty Spring slopes have made it much better for top to bottom bomber runs. I heard a rumor that they are changing Rahlves Run to Hucko's Run ;-)

The Marmot's have surfaced after their winter slumber. They are everywhere!

Spring "Won Oh Tree"

103!

It has started to warm up and the snow & icicles are slipping. It's pretty cool to look down the roof line and see the curve of the icicles pointing back in towards the house.

My neighbor has a toy to envy. A vintage Snow Cat. In case you're like me and are now interested in picking one up, check out: http://www.chameleoninc.com/snowcats/

Skiing has been pretty nice as well. Empty slopes, light breeze & warm temps.

Who's Your Daddy?

Brenda skied Palisades and today, that makes her your Daddy! Not some on the edge chute either but right down the middle! You'd have to stand on top of it to appreciate the vertical and realize that a fall would result in a 500 yard slide all the way down through the chute.

Skied with "Ivan the Great" all afternoon. Here are a few shots of Ivan rippin' at the Bowl today!

We hit the Rahlves Toe Kick today but without the Olympic Hucko Flair.

Alert: 80's One Piece seen at Sugarbowl today!

Met Josh from Full Throttle Tahoe while over at the new house. Josh was cool enough to provide some great insight on next winters sport and possible new blog: The Odyssey to Sled 100 Days & 5 Million Feet in a Single Season. This was all shot about 100' from our new home, what a bummer huh?

Midnight Gondola Ride

The second picture tells the whole story ;-)

What a difference a day can make!

Day 96! A spectacular day to be on the slopes. Great conditions, warm & sunny and no crowds! The abundant snowfall has made Sugarbowl a much bigger mountain.

Today was a personal victory as I skied the palisades for the first time! Getting this monkey off my todo list was quite welcomed as it has been calling all season. By far the most technical, steep & unforgiving area at Sugarbowl. Typically skiing this area means a drop of 40' or more but given all the recent snow it's possible to navigate the palisades without psycho drop. There is however a nice 10' cornice drop and some of the steepest chutes you will ever see that are required to make the descent. There are sections of the descent that require you to ski down a very steep 75' -100' that are narrower than the length of your skis. This only adds to the quality of the victory lane celebration!

Avalanche has been a constant threat given the huge amounts of snow we have been getting and the route home has been awfully tempting. I have been monitoring the local avalanche safety site http://www.sierraavalanchecenter.org/today.html and have been heeding their advice. Pictured is an avalanche that occurred today above Hwy 40 near the Lake run home. You can see in the picture where the fracture occurred above the slide and to put things into scale the RxR snow shed is about 20' tall located mid-slope.

Day 95 is bringing more snow. It's almost comedy at this point.

Another Great Day!

Who said Patrollers don't get any glamorous work? These guy's have it easy.... By the looks of it he might even be napping. ;-)

Day 94 BTW.

Sugarbowl "Live" Webcams!

I hooked up some remote wireless cameras while I was at Sugarbowl ;-) Just hit F5 to refresh the picture. A new shot is available every 10 minutes or so.

The Snow Line

Day 93!

Sugarbowl was right at the snow line today. Felt a little bit like skiing in Seattle again.

The crowds are really getting unbearable!
